Kate Tune

I’m a marriage and family therapist who works through a systemic and attachment-based lens, exploring how past and present relationships shape how we experience ourselves and others. Early emotional environments teach us ways to cope and connect, but those strategies aren’t always sustainable. Therapy offers a space to explore and reshape those patterns.

I specialize in working with couples and new parents navigating disconnection, communication challenges, and identity shifts. I also support individuals, adolescents, children, and families in learning to move through emotions rather than around them, building confidence, resilience, and secure connections. My approach is rooted in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), and other attachment-based practices, honoring the healing power of emotions and relationships.

I strive to create a collaborative, non-judgmental, and emotionally safe space where all parts of you are welcome. Whether you’re processing a difficult past or feeling stuck in the present, therapy can help you reconnect with your capacity for growth, healing, and meaningful connection. I am sex-positive, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and neurodiversity-informed, honoring the ways identity, family systems, and culture intersect in our emotional lives.

About Me:
Outside of therapy, I enjoy reading, learning, and spending time with my husband, pets, and family. I also love crocheting, listening to music, practicing yoga, and spending time in nature — ways I create, ground, and recharge.

Education:
Masters of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy. Northern Illinois University, 2022
Bachelors of Arts in Psychology and Spanish, Augustana College, 2020

What are your top specialties?

Couples therapy, relationship issues, emotional regulation, mindfulness, perinatal mental health, family of origin exploration, and parent-child relationships. Humans have a universal longing to feel heard and understood and a lot of times those needs can get lost in the process of conflict. I love supporting people in finding their way back to vulnerability so they can share it and get their attachment needs met.

What would you say to someone considering therapy with you?

Don't be scared! Reaching out for help takes a lot of courage and can feel extremely vulnerable. My number one priority is to ensure that clients feel safe and understood, which is vital to exploring and understanding emotions.

What insurance do you accept?

BCBS PPO, Aetna, Anthem, Cigna/Evernorth and United..

What does a typical session with you look like?

A lot of the work I do with clients is helping you see patterns that you get stuck in, so I am often paying attention to where this pattern might be showing up and reflecting it back to you, especially as it relates to how you do or don't handle emotions. I might also ask you to pay attention to your emotions in the present moment and how you experience them in your body.

Who is your ideal client?

I love working with clients that are ready to explore and understand themselves. I am passionate about helping clients understand ineffective patterns of coping with emotions or patterns in relationships that leave them feeling stuck. I especially love helping clients understand where these patterns stem from and how to relate to their emotions in a different way.

I'm most passionate about working with couples and individuals navigating relationship struggles. I'm also passionate about supporting parent-child relationships.

How do clients describe you?

Warm, nurturing, and supportive.

Kate’s Approach

I specialize in Emotionally-Focused and Attachment-based therapies. At its core, these theories believe that we are innately wired for connection as humans but sometimes have difficulty understanding how this need shows up and how to reach for close others.

Therapy with me will be non-pathologizing, empathic, client-centered (meaning I let clients take the lead and believe you are the expert in your own life). I start from the assumption that all behavior makes sense given previous wounds and that we tend to protect ourselves against the fear of not being accepted. My approach is systemic, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive - I believe people learn how to handle their emotions based on culture, world view, and environment, which can ultimately impact their connection with others.

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a humanistic, evidence-based approach to psychotherapy, drawing primarily from attachment theory to facilitate the creation of secure, vibrant connection with self and others.

  • An attachment-based approach looks at the connection between a person’s early attachment experiences with primary caregivers - and the person’s ability to develop normally and ultimately form healthy emotional and physical relationships as an adult.

  • Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) addresses the mental health needs of people suffering from the destructive effects of early trauma.
