Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor,
ADHD & Mood Specialist

Jenny Schermerhorn

MA, LCPC
Therapy for ages 8+

I’m a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor who enjoys working with individuals across the lifespan - kids, teens, and adults alike. My approach is warm, empathetic, and collaborative, helping clients find relief, support, and healing while gaining hope, empowerment, and a deeper understanding of themselves.

As an ADHD and Mood Specialist, I practice from a neuro-affirming lens and enjoy supporting neurodivergent clients, as well as those experiencing mood or impulse control disorders such as Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and Depression. Together, we focus on emotional regulation, impulse control, motivation, and social skills. I take an eclectic and individualized approach, tailoring treatment to your specific needs, goals, and values, and incorporate tools from DBT, CBT, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Trauma-Focused CBT, EFT, Gottman, and Exposure Response Prevention Therapy.

My clinical experience spans residential and intensive outpatient programs, community mental health organizations, and substance use treatment centers, allowing me to integrate client-centered and strengths-based approaches to support meaningful growth.

A little about me:
Outside of therapy, I love baking sweet treats, spending time with friends and family and snuggling on the couch with my dog.

Education:
The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, MA in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Trauma and Crisis Intervention, 2018
North Central College, BA in Psychology, 2014

What are your top specialties?

I primarily work with those with ADHD and mood issues. ADHD in itself tends to be one of the most complex and misunderstood diagnoses in mental health yet greatly impacts functioning, risk and quality of life. I also enjoy working with individuals with intense emotions, trauma, avoidance, executive functioning issues, mood disorders, or those struggling to manage the chaos and overwhelm of life. I enjoy helping people to develop a greater understanding of their strengths and needs so that they can feel more connected and capable.

How do clients describe you?

Warm, real and collaborative.

What insurance do you accept?

BCBS PPO, Aetna, Anthem, Cigna/Evernorth and United.

What does a typical session with you look like?

My approach to therapy is both collaborative and client-led. I encourage clients to take the lead in choosing the work for the session, but I will always jump in to guide when a client is unsure where they wish to take the work.

My typical session structure is dependent on your needs and wants - which we can figure out together. In session, I tend to balance talk therapy with evidence-based strategies if applicable. I am not afraid to gently challenge any of my clients and vice versa!

Who is your ideal client?

My ideal client just shows up as they are - don’t worry, learning to get more comfortable with opening up can be part of our work together too. I love when clients are equally as authentic, engaged and curious. I enjoy working with all genders and ages.

What would you say to someone considering therapy with you?

Just try it – I know it can be intimidating but it can be rewarding too. Therapy is a powerful tool for personal growth.

My approach to therapy is both collaborative and client-led. I encourage clients to take the lead in choosing the work for the session, but I will always jump in to guide when a client is unsure where they wish to take the work.
